The brief
Tempest Technologies, an AV system design and integration company, worked with a client's multi-state dentist offices to build a more advanced experience for patients.
The goal was to let the doctor and patient communicate through the dentist chair: pulling up previous X-rays, office visit notes and other documentation, reviewing them in the chair on a touch-screen monitor, then having the patient sign off on a treatment plan — all in the room.
The challenge
Tempest tested several manufacturers hunting for one thing in particular: the ability to send USB touch-screen interactivity between doctor and patient, while providing power at either end.
Working in a medical office, timing was as critical as the specification. The offices could not take any downtime, so units had to arrive quickly and install in almost no time.
The solution
The KanexPro 4K HDMI Extender over HDBaseT 2.0 with USB 2.0 (EXT-HDBTKVM100) is HDCP 2.2 compliant and extends uncompressed HDMI video, audio, USB 2.0, control signals and PoC over a single CAT5e/6 cable.
It ships with one power supply and is PoH compliant, so it can be powered from either the transmitter or the receiver — saving the installer the time and cost of putting a power outlet at the far end.
Over shielded CATx it runs to 100 metres at 4K60, or 150 metres at 1080p60 or 1920×1200@60Hz.
The result
Over 300 operating rooms across three states — KanexPro's largest medical installation to date, and one that is still being extended.
The same extender suits corporate and education rooms for the same reason it suited this one: two USB interfaces let a soft-codec system be used for video conferencing and with PTZ cameras.
The 4K HDMI Extender has a bi-directional power source, and because of the way the client wanted to utilize the device, it provided us with immense versatility for the environment. We haven't experienced any dissipation in any of the 200+ 4K HDMI Extenders we've installed, which would occur with many other products.
