EXT-HD4KFIBCTL-10KM: 4K60 KVM Over One Fiber

EXT-HD4KFIBCTL-10KM EXT-HD4KFIBCTL-10KM 4K60 HDMI-over-Fiber Extender with Full Control over One Fiber (10km) Add IR, RS-232 & Audio De-embed to Fiber KVM — 4K60 4:4:4 HDCP 2.2 Video plus Keyboard/Mouse… Product page →

A 4K fiber extender that carries control on the same strand

The EXT-HD4KFIBCTL-10KM is a transmitter-and-receiver kit that moves a full HDMI signal — plus keyboard, mouse, IR and serial control — over fiber, so a source and its display can sit far apart without copper between them. It is built on HDMI 2.0b at 18Gbps with HDCP 2.2, and passes HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and HLG. This article covers what the kit is, how far it reaches, and what else rides the same fiber.

What is the EXT-HD4KFIBCTL-10KM and what is it for?

It is a point-to-point HDMI-over-fiber extender: an HDMI source connects to the transmitter's HDMI IN, and the receiver drives a remote display from its HDMI OUT. It suits campus, broadcast and command-centre runs where distance and galvanic isolation matter more than the 100m ceiling and copper ground-loop risk of HDBaseT. Because it is fiber, the link avoids the copper ground-loop and EMI exposure that a twisted-pair run carries. Each unit is a compact black metal enclosure measuring 5.67" × 3.07" × 0.91" (144 × 78 × 23mm).

How far will it send 4K60 4:4:4 video, and over what fiber?

The link reaches up to 10km at 4K60 4:4:4 over single-mode fiber, with OM4 multi-mode fiber supporting shorter, plant-matched runs instead. Both connect through a 10G SFP+ module on LC fiber, from the transmitter's LC FIBER OUT to the receiver's LC FIBER IN. Supported input and output resolutions include 3840×2160p60/50, 4096×2160p60/50, 3840×2160p30/25, 1920×1200p60RB, 1920×1080p60/50 and several lower modes. Color depth spans 8, 10 and 12-bit across RGB 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2 and YCbCr 4:2:0.

What besides video travels over the single fiber?

Bi-directional IR and RS-232 pass through on the same fiber, so you can drive the source from the display end or the display from the source end. USB 1.1 keyboard/mouse transmission is included as well: the host PC connects to the transmitter's USB HOST port, and the keyboard and mouse plug into the receiver's two USB-A ports — a full KVM over one strand, without the second cable that competing 10km fiber extenders require for keyboard, mouse and serial. The receiver also de-embeds analog audio on a 3-pin 3.5mm Phoenix AUDIO OUT, and the transmitter offers an HDMI loop-out that feeds a local confidence monitor.

How is the kit powered and set up in the field?

Each unit takes its own locking DC 5V/2A supply, and each supply accepts AC 100–240V at 50/60Hz. Transmitter and receiver each draw 5W maximum, and weigh 0.74 lbs (337g) and 0.73 lbs (330g) respectively — light enough to mount wherever the run ends. Advanced EDID management and a front-panel DIP switch on the transmitter commission the link on site; for example, DIP setting 1101 selects 4K60 4:4:4 HDR 2.0CH, while setting 0000 uses a user-defined EDID that defaults to 1080P60 SDR 2.0CH. A surge-protection device is recommended, since the electronics can be damaged by spikes, surges, shock or lightning.
