EXT-HD60M: 1080p HDMI Extender over CAT6 Explained

EXT-HD60M EXT-HD60M 1080p HDMI Extender over CAT6 up to 196ft (60m) HDCP 1.4, IR Pass-Through, Local HDMI Loop-Out, Deep Color 48-bit Product page →

The EXT-HD60M is a transmitter and receiver pair. It carries HDMI video, audio and IR control over a single CAT6, CAT6A or CAT7 cable. It fits jobs where a source is too far from its display for an HDMI cable, such as a laptop at a lectern feeding a ceiling projector. It also suits a media player in a rack feeding a remote screen. The transmitter has its own HDMI loop-out, so a monitor next to the source shows the same picture as the far end.

What the EXT-HD60M does

The source connects to the transmitter's HDMI input. One CAT6 run goes from the transmitter's RJ45 port to the receiver's RJ45 port. The receiver's HDMI output feeds the display. The extender is HDCP 1.4 and EDID compliant, supports 16-bit per channel (48-bit) Deep Color, and carries digital audio with the video. Auto-adjustment, buffering and signal equalization keep the picture stable over the run.

How far can it extend, and at what resolution?

The EXT-HD60M reaches 60m (196ft) at 1080p@60Hz over CAT6, CAT6A or CAT7 cable with an oxygen-free copper core. The cable must be terminated to IEEE-568B at both ends.

Which resolutions does it support?

It supports 480i@60Hz, 480p@60Hz, 576i@50Hz, 576p@50Hz, 720p@50/60Hz, 1080i@50/60Hz and 1080p@50/60Hz. The maximum is 1080p@60Hz (1920x1080). It does not carry 4K; KanexPro's 4K extenders cover that.

Can I use CAT5 or CAT5e cable?

No. The EXT-HD60M needs CAT6, CAT6A or CAT7 and will not work over CAT5 or CAT5e. Use solid copper cable, not copper-clad aluminium (CCA). We strongly recommend shielded cable with shielded RJ45 connectors to reduce EMI.

What is the HDMI loop-out on the transmitter for?

It is a local HDMI output on the transmitter for preview or monitoring on a nearby display. It works independently of the remote output at the receiver, so a presenter can watch a confidence monitor while the far display shows the same source.

Can I control the source from the display end?

Yes. An IR receiver at the receiver end picks up remote control signals and sends them back to the transmitter over the same CAT6 cable, so you can operate the source from where the display is. IR pass-through covers 20-60KHz, and two IR cables come in the box.

Troubleshooting

What should I check if the image is missing or looks wrong?

For no image or an abnormal display, such as wrong colours:

  1. Press the RESET button on the receiver.
  2. Try a shorter CAT6 cable.
  3. Check that both ends are terminated to IEEE-568B.

If a shorter cable has not helped, look closely at the termination and the cable itself. The cable must be solid copper CAT6, CAT6A or CAT7, not CCA and not CAT5e.

Why is the receiver's LINK LED flashing?

Check that the CAT6 cable is terminated to IEEE-568B. Then make sure the transmitter is receiving an HDMI signal from the source. If it still flashes, reset both the transmitter and the receiver.

The LINK LED is solid but there is no picture. What next?

Press RESET on the receiver. Check the HDMI cable from the receiver to the display. Make sure the CAT6 cable has a solid copper core, not CCA.
