Quick Guide to HDbaseT

featured image for Quick Guide to HDbaseT article

HDbaseT is a commercial connectivity and consumer electronic standard for the transmission of certain communication devices. The devices include uncompressed ultra-high-definition video, digital audio, DC power, Ethernet, USB 2.0, and other control communication. This is done over a single category cable up to 100 meters in length. It can be terminated by the same modular cable technology found in Ethernet networks. Over the last decade, the HDbaseT technology has dramatically advanced. Below you will find a helpful and quick guide to HDbaseT.

Quick Guide to HDbaseT

HDbaseT is complementary to digital connectivity standards such as HDMI technology. It connects and networks consumer electronic devices, in addition to industry and commercial technology. Some of the devices include set-top boxes, DVD players, personal computers, video game consoles, AV receivers, media streamers, and Blu-ray disc players. What differentiates HDbaseT from other technology is its “5Play” feature set. The 5Play feature set includes audiovisual media, Ethernet, USB, Control Signals, and Power-Over-HDbaseT.

HDbaseT Features

HDbaseT began by dominating in HDbaseT extender products for HDMI technology. The technology has continued to develop over the last decade and is also now embedded in audio-visual devices such as video projectors and audio-visual receivers. The HDbaseT technology has a variety of 5Play features detailed below.

Audio Visual:

HDbaseT supports uncompressed video to a network of devices for many of your audio visual systems. It also operates as a point-to-point connection. HDbaseT accurately renders gaming graphics and electronic programming guides without impacting the video quality. Various technologies are supported, including standard, enhanced, high-definition, Ultra-HD, and 3D television and PC video formats. All standard HDMI audio formats are supported as audio is embedded with the video in HDMI.

Near Zero Latency:

HDbaseT features near-zero latency. Latency is the time it takes data to pass from one point on a network to another. With that, the HDbaseT specification is fast as it takes less than 100 microseconds over 100 meters of cable. This results in the HDbaseT having near-zero latency.

Ethernet:

The HDbaseT can provide internet access to a variety of devices like smart TVs. It can also enable computers and other consumer electronic devices to communicate with each other and access multimedia content on local networks. Specifically, HDbaseT 1.0 and 2.0 supports the 100 megabits per second version of Ethernet over twisted pair.

USB:

HDbaseT supports USB 2.0 with a capacity to connect up to 7 USB devices. HDbaseT 2.0 is fast as it has a transfer rate of up to 190 megabits per second. HDbaseT has a transfer rate that’s even faster as it can reach up to 350 megabits per second.

Control Signals:

Basic protocol signals that control consumer electronic functionality are also supported by HDbaseT, including power-on, power-off, play, stop, and remote control commands.

Power:

Power over Ethernet describes any number of standards or systems that pass electric power along with data on twisted-pair Ethernet cabling. This technology allows a single cable to provide data connection and electrical power to a number of electronic devices. This means that the HDbaseT can provide up to 100 watts of operating direct current power to consumer electronic devices. This means that the HDbaseT link does not require a separate power connection.
