Getting Started: What is AV over IP?

AV over IP distributes audio and video across a standard IP network — the same Ethernet infrastructure used for data. Instead of fixed point-to-point HDMI cables or a hardware matrix switcher, sources connect to encoders that convert the HDMI signal into an IP stream, and displays connect to decoders that receive and reconstruct it. Routing is handled in software, making the system scalable without hardware changes.

KanexPro AV over IP solutions support 4K60, HDR10, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos/DTS:X, USB KVM, 9×9 video wall, and optional Dante audio over standard 1G or 10G Ethernet.

Choosing the Right Codec

KanexPro offers three codec families. Choose based on your bandwidth, latency, and quality requirements:

Network Requirements

AV over IP requires a managed Ethernet switch. Unmanaged switches are not supported.

  • 1G deployments (JPEG2000, H.265): Managed gigabit switch with IGMP snooping enabled. Recommended: Cisco SG series, Netgear M4250, or equivalent.
  • 10G deployments (SDVoE): 10GbE managed switch required. All encoder and decoder ports must be 10G.
  • IGMP snooping: Must be enabled to manage multicast traffic and prevent network flooding.
  • VLAN (recommended): Isolate AV traffic from corporate data traffic on a dedicated VLAN.
  • Jumbo frames: Enable 9000-byte MTU on all switch ports for JPEG2000 and SDVoE deployments.

System Design Basics

A typical AV over IP system consists of:

  • Encoder (ENC): One per source (PC, camera, Blu-ray, etc.). Connects via HDMI and Ethernet to the switch.
  • Decoder (DEC): One per display. Connects via HDMI and Ethernet to the switch.
  • IP Controller (optional): Provides matrix-style routing control via REST API, RS-232, or third-party control systems such as Crestron, AMX, or Savant.
  • Managed switch: The routing backbone. All encoders and decoders connect to this switch.

IP addressing: Assign static IPs or use DHCP. Encoders and decoders must be on the same subnet. Recommended default: 192.168.1.x/24.

Quick Setup Steps

  1. Connect all encoders and decoders to the managed switch.
  2. Enable IGMP snooping on the switch.
  3. Power on encoders and decoders — they will auto-discover each other on the network.
  4. Use the web GUI or IP controller to assign encoder-to-decoder routing.
  5. For video wall, configure the 9×9 layout and bezel compensation in the controller interface.
