What the AUD2ACV Is

The KanexPro AUD2ACV is a compact digital-to-analog audio converter. It takes a digital S/PDIF audio input and outputs analog stereo on left and right RCA connectors. In signal-chain terms, it sits between a source or display that only outputs digital audio and an amplifier, powered speakers, or other equipment that only accepts analog line-level stereo.

It also functions as a down mixer: where the incoming digital stream carries multichannel audio, the AUD2ACV folds that down to two-channel stereo so it can be reproduced on a standard L/R analog output. This makes it useful when the source is multichannel but the endpoint is a simple stereo device.

The Problem It Solves

Modern displays, streaming devices, and AV distribution gear increasingly carry audio only on digital interfaces. A large share of installed amplifiers, mixers, distributed-audio inputs, and legacy powered speakers still expect analog RCA line-level input. When those two ends meet, there is no direct cable that bridges them — a digital bitstream cannot be fed into an analog input. The AUD2ACV performs the actual decode and conversion, not just a physical connector change.

Typical situations where an integrator reaches for it:

  • A TV or display offers S/PDIF audio out but the local system needs analog stereo for an amplifier or assistive-listening feed.
  • An HDMI or HDBaseT distribution product provides a digital audio breakout, and the zone endpoint is analog-only.
  • A source outputs a multichannel digital stream that must be reproduced on a two-channel analog device, requiring a down mix rather than pass-through.

Where It Fits in the Signal Chain

Place the AUD2ACV downstream of the digital audio source and upstream of the analog endpoint:

  • Input side: connect the source's S/PDIF output to the decoder's digital input.
  • Output side: run the RCA left/right pair to the line-level input on the amplifier, receiver, or powered speakers.

Because the RCA outputs are line-level analog, they connect to a line input, not a speaker-level terminal. If the endpoint only has speaker binding posts, you still need a powered amplifier stage after the decoder.

Application Notes

Confirm the source's digital audio output format before specifying. The AUD2ACV addresses the common case of two-channel PCM and multichannel-to-stereo down mix; whether a given encoded surround format is supported depends on the source's output configuration, so verify what the source is set to emit. Where a source lets you choose its digital audio output type in a settings menu, selecting a stereo or PCM output generally gives the most predictable result into a stereo endpoint.

Cable lengths, connector types on the endpoint, and available power at the install location vary by site, so plan those against the actual equipment on both ends rather than assuming a standard layout.
