Choosing Your HDMI Extender

featured image for article about Choosing Your HDMI Extender

HDMI Cables are often an integral part of a home or office electronic setup. This is because they have dramatically improved the experience due to their major benefits. HDMI cables can increase the number of devices linked to one another, which can help reduce the number of cables needed to complete your setup. Despite the major benefits of HDMI cables, you may need an HDMI extender for optimal performance. Below you will find helpful tips on choosing your HDMI extender.

Choosing Your HDMI Extender

There are a number of factors to consider when it comes to choosing your HDMI extender. Because there are a variety of options, it’s important to understand your project needs before you choose your HDMI extender. Consider the following before you make your purchase.

Length:

HDMI cables can be too short at times, so it’s important to ensure that your HDMI extender is long enough. HDMI extenders can range from 30 to 330 feet, depending on your needs. HDMI over IP and HDMI over HDBaseT are great options if you need a long HDMI extender.

Resolution:

Determining the required video resolution is necessary. Some projects need 1080p, while others may need 4K. While 1080p can meet the vast majority of your basic needs, 4K resolution provides a high-quality picture. It’s often more vivid and provides a much better viewing experience. Cables that are 1080p can often be used in the workplace, but home entertainment systems may benefit more from an HDMI extender that offers 4K resolution.

Potential Delay:

If delays here and there are no problem, most HDMI extenders will work. However, if delays are a problem, consider an HDBaseT extender, as it will not pose latency issues. This may result in a more expensive HDMI extender, but it’s worth the price if you can’t have any delays.

Potential Expansion:

If you think you may want to expand your project in the future, it’s better to choose an HDMI over IP as you can easily upgrade your project. This is often a great choice for those in the workplace as you may not know what you will need in the future in terms of tech capabilities.

Types of Extenders

There are a number of HDMI extenders to choose from that offer several benefits. Understanding the factors to consider discussed above, at least one of the following options should meet your project needs.

HDMI Over IP:

This is also referred to as “HDMI over Ethernet.” It uses an ethernet network to send high-definition video signals from a source to multiple receivers. This technology overcomes the distance limitations and allows for seamless distribution to other displays.

HDMI Over HDBaseT:

HDMI over HDBaseT extenders function similarly to HDMI over IP. However, they utilize HDBaseT technology instead of Ethernet technology. This HDMI extender offers versatility for audiovisual projects. However, it can only reach 100 meters, so consider your distance needs.

HDMI Over Coax:

HDMI over coax transmit HDMI signals using coaxial cables. This is often used for cable television and radio frequency transmission.

HDMI Over Wireless:

HDMI over wireless offers wire-free connections between HDMI devices. While this is convenient, it relies on a strong and stable wireless connection. Without this, performance issues can occur. If latency or delays would be an issue, this is likely not the best choice.
